Dental Sedation & General Anaesthesia in Nepal

Dental anxiety is real and it should never be a barrier to receiving the care you or your child needs. At The Shine Dental Clinic in Sanepa, Lalitpur, we offer conscious sedation (nitrous oxide / happy gas) and dental treatment under general anaesthesia (GA) for patients who need additional support to receive safe and comprehensive dental care.

We serve anxious patients of all ages, children with special needs, and complex cases requiring extensive treatment  providing a calm, safe, and professionally managed experience.

Our Dental Sedation & General Anaesthesia Services

Nitrous oxide is a safe, mild sedative gas inhaled through a small nose mask during treatment. It induces a relaxed, calm state while keeping the patient conscious and responsive. Its effects wear off within minutes of stopping the gas, allowing patients to leave the clinic independently. Suitable for children and adults with mild to moderate dental anxiety.

For patients requiring a deeper level of relaxation, we may prescribe oral sedative medication taken before the appointment. The patient remains conscious but feels deeply relaxed and may have little memory of the procedure. A responsible adult must accompany the patient.

For patients where conventional dental treatment is not possible  including those with severe dental phobia, complex special needs, young children requiring extensive treatment, or patients with significant medical histories, we arrange treatment under general anaesthesia. GA is conducted by a qualified anaesthetist in a controlled, safe environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your Questions About Dental Care, Answered.

Yes. Nitrous oxide has been used safely in dentistry for decades and is considered one of the safest sedation options for children. It is administered through a comfortable nose mask, takes effect in minutes, and wears off quickly after the procedure.

No. Nitrous oxide is a conscious sedation  your child remains awake, responsive, and able to communicate. They will simply feel relaxed and calm, making it much easier to complete dental treatment comfortably.

General anaesthesia (GA) means the patient is fully asleep during treatment, allowing the dental team to complete all necessary procedures in one session. It is typically reserved for young children or patients with complex needs for whom conscious treatment is not possible.

Yes. At The Shine Dental Clinic, GA dental treatment is conducted by a qualified and experienced anaesthetist in a fully equipped, safe clinical environment. Full pre-operative assessment is carried out for every patient.

We would first work with your child using gentle, child-friendly techniques. If that is insufficient, we can offer nitrous oxide sedation for mild anxiety, oral sedation for greater relaxation, or GA for complex cases. We discuss all options with parents and always choose the safest, least invasive approach.

Sedation (nitrous oxide or oral) keeps the patient conscious and able to respond, while general anaesthesia puts the patient fully asleep with no awareness of the procedure. Sedation is suited to anxiety management for routine or moderately complex treatment, while GA is reserved for cases where treatment cannot be carried out safely or effectively any other way.

Your anaesthetist and our team will give you specific pre-operative instructions, which usually include fasting from food and drink for a set period before the appointment. It's important to follow these instructions exactly, as they are essential for your child's safety during the procedure.

Most patients recover within a few hours and can go home the same day, though grogginess, mild nausea, or tiredness for the remainder of the day is common. We monitor patients closely after treatment and provide clear aftercare and recovery instructions before you leave.

There isn't a fixed age limit. Suitability depends on the individual's medical history, the complexity of treatment needed, and assessment by our dental and anaesthetic team, rather than age alone. We carry out a full assessment for every patient before recommending an option.

As with any sedation or anaesthesia, there are some risks, though serious complications are rare when procedures are carried out by qualified professionals in a properly equipped setting. We carry out thorough pre-operative assessments for every patient and discuss any individual risk factors with you beforehand.
