Ulcer & Oral Lesion Treatment in Nepal

Mouth ulcers, canker sores, and oral lesions can be painful and persistent and while most are harmless, some require professional assessment to rule out more serious conditions. At The Shine Dental Clinic in Sanepa, Lalitpur, our team provides prompt, evidence-based diagnosis and treatment for a full range of oral soft tissue conditions.

We serve children, adults, local Nepali families, expats, and international visitors, with a calm environment and English-speaking clinicians.

Our Ulcer & Oral Lesion Services

Recurrent aphthous ulcers (canker sores) are the most common oral lesion. We assess severity and frequency, provide professional topical treatments including corticosteroid gels and antimicrobial rinses, and identify any underlying triggers such as nutritional deficiencies or immune factors.

Oral infections including bacterial, viral (such as herpetic stomatitis), and fungal (such as oral thrush / candidiasis) require accurate diagnosis for effective treatment. We prescribe appropriate antimicrobials and provide supportive care to promote healing.

Persistent or unusual oral lesions should always be assessed by a dental professional. We examine lesions that have not healed within 2–3 weeks and refer for biopsy where clinically indicated to exclude conditions such as oral precancers or cancer.

Many recurrent oral lesions are linked to oral hygiene, diet, stress, or systemic health. We provide personalised advice on diet, oral hygiene, and lifestyle factors that can reduce the frequency and severity of outbreaks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your Questions About Dental Care, Answered.

Most minor ulcers heal within 1–2 weeks. See a dentist if an ulcer lasts more than 3 weeks, is unusually large or painful, is associated with a lump, or if you have multiple recurring ulcers as these may require investigation.

Common causes include minor trauma, stress, nutritional deficiencies (especially iron, B12, or folate), hormonal changes, and certain foods. In some cases, recurring ulcers are linked to underlying medical conditions such as Coeliac disease or inflammatory bowel disease.

Most mouth ulcers are benign and self-limiting. However, a sore that does not heal within 3 weeks should always be assessed professionally, as a small proportion can represent precancerous or cancerous changes that require early treatment.

Oral thrush (candidiasis) is treated with antifungal medications, typically a miconazole gel or nystatin suspension. We assess for underlying causes such as denture use, dry mouth, or immune suppression and address these as part of treatment.

Yes, mouth ulcers are common in children, often triggered by minor injury, viral infections (such as hand, foot and mouth disease), or stress. We provide gentle assessment and age-appropriate treatment to relieve discomfort quickly.

Canker sores (aphthous ulcers) form inside the mouth on soft tissue and aren't contagious. Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus, typically appear on or around the lips, and are contagious. If you're not sure which one you have, a quick assessment will confirm it and guide the right treatment.

A warm salt-water rinse, avoiding acidic, spicy, or rough-textured foods, and an over-the-counter topical gel can ease discomfort while you wait to be seen. If the ulcer is large or particularly painful, professional topical treatment works faster and we'd recommend booking sooner rather than later.

Common canker sores are not contagious. Oral thrush can occasionally pass between people, particularly in infants or those who are immunocompromised, though this is uncommon in healthy adults. Viral oral infections such as herpetic stomatitis are contagious and should be assessed promptly.

Yes. Stress, tiredness, and certain foods such as citrus, chocolate, or coffee are common triggers for recurrent canker sores. Nutritional deficiencies particularly low iron, vitamin B12, or folate can also increase how often they occur, which is why we review diet and lifestyle as part of assessment.

Yes. Our team provides emergency dental care for children and adults, including toothaches, dental trauma, and urgent oral health issues.
